Las Olas Boulevard | Painting the Town Gets New Meaning
Painting the Town has gotten a new meaning, especially in the Las Olas Boulevard area of Fort Lauderdale. In order to call attention to crosswalks and promote pedestrian safety, the western end of Las Olas Boulevard received a special kind of paint job. The design was created by Miami-based artist Cecilia Lueza and brought to fruition in May by 35 volunteers. The city has allocated $500,000 to promote pedestrian safety and each intersection costs $42,000 to create, paint included. The paint is water based and is expected to last three to five years.
It is not without critics, however. Some liken the idea to the installation of brick pavers in the intersections of Broward Boulevard. Some have complained that tire marks and the harsh Florida sun will fade or mark the costly renderings that are an endeavor to bring a sense of community and safety to the locations, by making people more aware of their physical surroundings.
