Fort Lauderdale | Lowe’s Helps Bees
Scientists have recently reported that mass extinctions of marine animals may soon be occurring at alarmingly rapid rates than previously projects due to pollution, rising water temperatures and loss of habitat. Many land species also face a similar fate for the same reasons. Since But perhaps the biggest foreboding danger of all facing humans is the loss of the global honeybee population.
Since 2006 beekeepers have been noticing their honeybee populations have been dying off at increasingly rapid rates. Neurotoxic pesticides known as neonicotinoids have been banned around the world because of the harm that they post to native bees, as well as the non-native honey bees used so widely in agriculture. Yet these chemicals remain for sale in the US and are widely used in agricultural crops.
Lowe’s Home Improvement giant, along with Friends of the Earth and partners, have decided to do something about it. Lowe’s announced that it will begin to phase out neonicotinoids (“neonics”) over the next 4 years as suitable alternatives become available. Lowe’s also said that it would work with growers to “eliminate the use of neonic pesticides on bee-attractive plants we sell.
The environmental group Friends of the Earth said it was “pleased Lowe’s is listening to consumer concerns” and the “growing body of science telling us we need to move away from bee-toxic pesticides.” To view the full story and learn how you can help save the honeybees click here: Lowe’s Helps Bees | Eco Watch
