Fort Lauderdale Real Estate | Midcentury Modern Architecture
Is a house a time capsule that reflects the era in which it was designed? If so, you could say that midcentury modern architecture represents ideas developed by people who believed the style could change society and create a different social atmosphere. Midcentury modern can be characterized by open space, flat planes, and large glass windows. Homes with this style were built from 1945 to the 1980s and feature a simplicity that integrates with nature. This encourages people to see the world in a different way. You can see examples of this style when you look at Fort Lauderdale Real Estate.
Many architects behind these homes fled the rise of Nazi Germany. This list includes Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer, who moved on to teach at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe went to the Illinois Institute of Technology to lead the department of architecture. He also founded the Second School of Chicago.
World War II brought experimental material and technologies such as plywood and steel. These were used for building after the end of the war. In 1945, John Entenza started The Case Study House Program. This program created special prototypes for postwar housing that would later become iconic. He was also the publisher of the famous California Arts & Architecture magazine.
Sian Winship, president of the the Southern California Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians, knows this subject well. “The birth of midcentury modern was after the war. The houses had open floor plans and giant sliding-glass doors, which encouraged people to go outside and be healthy. In a traditional home, the window height is 4 to 5 feet, and you can’t see out as a child. With these walls of glass, children became engaged and open-minded because the environment stimulated the senses in a different way.”
According to Winship, Frank Lloyd Wright was a huge influence in the world of midcentury modern. He even trained Rudolph Schindler and Richard Neutra, men who made their own marks with this style. Fort Lauderdale Real Estate is a wonderful example of the possibilities that come with midcentury modern.
“It’s nice to see midcentury modernism being appreciated now, as we’re entering a period where houses from the 1960s are becoming eligible to be on the National Register of Historic Places.” To learn more about midcentury modern, click here: HGTV
